Snow Mold Solutions
Warm up to effective control options.
Snow mold is the general name of certain fungal diseases (pathogen Microdochium nivale) that typically occurs in the early spring on turf that is cold and wet because of melting snow. The two most common infections are pink snow mold (also known as Fusarium patch) and gray snow mold (sometimes called Typhula blight).

Snow MoldThe diseases cause circular patches of discolored grass several inches in diameter. Gray snow mold looks like whitish cobwebs on the leaf tissue, while pink snow mold has a salmon color and appears on the crown of the plant. Often both infections occur at the same time, and in severe cases, the small spots can expand and touch each other to form large areas of damaged grass.

The good news is that snow mold normally goes away as days get warmer and drier. However, when you have golfers eager to play after a long winter, you don't want to wait. These simple solutions can help you control snow mold:

  1. Don't make the disease feel welcome: Dormant spores of snow mold fungi like to live in thatch or under leaves, so minimize those opportunities. Keep fallen leaves off of your greens during the winter, and avoid excessive build-up of thatch on other sections of turf. These steps also allow extra sunlight to reach the surface and fight the mold.

  2. Go easy on fall fertilizing: Snow mold problems are generally worse following excessive nitrogen applications in the fall. That is especially true when a late-season growth flush doesn't get mowed, which gives the fungi more places to hide during the winter.

  3. Treat with a good fungicide: Pegasus™ HPX from Phoenix Environmental Care is the most advanced liquid fungicide based on chlorothalonil, a proven active ingredient for treating gray snow mold. With superior tenacity, longevity, tank-mix options and product performance, reformulated Pegasus HPX delivers better protective control of gray snow mold plus other fungal problems. Pegasus HPX gives you flexibility and confidence, and helps you achieve improved turf quality ratings.
